It’s no secret that artistic talent pumps through the veins of York city, but there may be more to York’s art and music scenes than meets the eye. With new creative art and music venues popping up continually, you might find it hard keeping up with the new additions. Explore the following eight must-see emerging creative art and music venues in York.

I-ron-ic

On the surface, I-ron-ic is a great spot to get rich hot coffee, homemade pastries and classic candy. But I-ron-ic is also a major art venue that’s featured the work of 187 local artists. The art forms featured in I-ron-ic are classic and metal sculptures, jewelry, found artistry, paintings, writing and more. I-ron-ic keeps the scene fresh by switching out the featured pieces every 30 to 40 days.

The shop also holds live music events and offers public-access art classes hosted by the featured artists themselves.  In addition to the art and entertainment featured inside, just to the right of the building is a large sculpture garden filled with vibrant, metal animals and flowers.

HIVE artspace

Like a colony of bees, HIVE artspace unites activity with artistic endeavors. Managed by Susan Scofield, HIVE artspace brings individuals and their art pieces together. The building is home to the studios of Fiel Patricio, Mark Broomell and Liette Monic (who creates artwork and also uses her studio space as an urban shaman), located on the floors above the gallery spaces. The trio also occasionally exhibits their work in the group shows in the gallery. Inside the HIVE artspace gallery, you’ll find monthly themed group exhibits featuring up to 45 different artists in an exhibit. Step inside, and you’ll find paintings, glass-encased mounted insects, handmade jewelry, needle-felted animal figurines and more. The HIVE artspace also hosts live musicians for special events.
