Located on a 60-acre, chemical-free farm in the village of Stoverstown, York County, Sonnewald Natural Foods is an easy 15-minute drive from downtown York. Established in 1955 by the parents of co-owner Willa Lefever, Harold “Tim” and Grace, this 8,000-square-foot family-owned business is one of the longest continually operating natural food stores in Pennsylvania.
Here, you’ll find a wide variety of products dedicated to healthy living. This selection includes organic produce, more than 300 climate-controlled bulk items, natural groceries, nutritional supplements, non-toxic personal care choices, and earth-friendly products for the home.
Time spent at Sonnewald isn’t like a visit to the supermarket or pharmacy. For team member Billy Krouse, it’s the feeling of coming home. “This is a good place to come and build a relationship with yourself,” he says. “Before I started working here, I was a customer. I came because I’m a seeker for knowledge. I care about what I put into my body.” Indeed, that knowledge can be life changing, as a customer testimonial (“I had no idea when I first came here five years ago that this place would change my whole life”) illustrates.
Whether it’s helping customers discern the truth about their health or giving people some literal “grist for the mill” by stone-grinding organic grains into flour at the on-site mill room, the personal experience is a highlight of what the Sonnewald team offers.
Education is a very high priority and the store attends many local events and wellness fairs. Weed walks, farm tours, and frequent in-store demos further enhance the Sonnewald commitment to creating a well-informed, healthy community.
