Why aren’t you outside? Well, we know you’re reading this blog now, but after you do, step away from the screen and step into a park. Within the City of York, you can find close to 20 different places for outdoor recreation. In York County, county parks and state parks offer more opportunities for getting outside without having to drive around for hours.

Ready to choose your own adventure? Select from what you want to do below to find the park that offers exactly what you seek.

Get Active on the Rail Trail

The Heritage Rail Trail County Park covers 176 acres and runs 21 miles long from the southern portion of York County to the Colonial Courthouse in downtown York.

Whether you want to stay active by biking, hiking, jogging, running and walking, the Rail Trail is the place to head. You’ll witness peaceful scenery set amid the rural character of York County, and in the City of York itself, the easy access means you can go from sidewalks onto the Rail Trail and back in a short span of time — great for those who need to blow off some steam at the end of their workday.

Take to the Water

Codorus State Park, a 3,500-acre-park south of York, is home to one of the top three largest manmade lakes in the state. With its 26 miles of shoreline, Lake Marburg is a destination for boaters and fishing enthusiasts, with yellow perch, bluegill and largemouth bass among the species you can find here.

Foundry Plaza at Foundry Park along the Codorus Creek in downtown York holds Creek Fire on the fourth Saturday of each month during the late spring and summer seasons. Featuring food vendors, floating fire pits on the water, live music and children’s entertainment, Creek Fire makes for a fun evening with friends and neighbors.

Find a Place for Your Pooches

York doesn’t disappoint with the number of places you and your pets can enjoy some one-on-one time together outdoors. Canine Meadows Off-Leash Dog Area within John Rudy County Park is a popular destination for pooches (and was ranked in the top 20 of America’s 40 best dog parks by Dog Fancy magazine).

Hike It

York County’s parks offer avid hikers plenty of places to explore southcentral Pennsylvania’s beauty by foot, but one of our favorite spots that’s totally worth the experience is Highpoint Scenic Vista & Recreation Area outside Wrightsville (about a 15- to 20-minute drive from downtown York). The 193-mile Mason-Dixon Trail runs through this park (which marks the 10th anniversary of its founding this year). Among its 79 acres of scenic meadowlands, you get the treat of taking in a stunning hilltop sweep over the Susquehanna River.

Find City Park Paths for Leisure Strolls

If you live in the City of York, you don’t have to look too far to find your own path to take when you want a leisurely stroll. Nine parks (the park at Kiwanis Lake, Westminster, James E. (Jim) Gross, Foundry Plaza, Thackston, Williams, MLK, Penn Commons, Campus and Hudson) offer paths and trails suited for walks by yourself or with friends and family.

Get Your Game On in the Park

From baseball and basketball to soccer and street hockey, no matter what game you may have in mind, you’ll find several parks where you can take to the court or the field with the sport of your choice.

Care for a game of disc golf? Rated as one of the most challenging disc golf courses in Pennsylvania, the Codorus State Park disc golf course (site of the 2005 Pennsylvania disc golf championships) features 54 holes with paved tees spread throughout fields and forests. For the younger set, you can also find a nine-hole course at Codorus State Park.

Gifford Pinchot State Park also features an 18-hole course on the park’s west and east sides. For the ultimate disc golf experience, test your skill on the hills of the Quaker’s Challenge Course.

No matter what recreational pursuit brings you outdoors this season, whether it’s in the city or in the county, you’ll discover that your next adventure is limitless in #iloveyorkcity and #yorkcountypa.
